Breaking News

A town centre market day drama in Dereham ended today after Army bomb disposal experts discovered that rusty objects found near a bowls green were wartime RAF fire extinguishers.

Dozens of staff were evacuated from their town centre offices in Dereham and told to go home after five canisters - initially possibly thought to be unexploded bombs - were found at St Nicholas Bowls Club at about 12pm.

Two bowls club members made the discovery while they were laying paving slabs.

Police were unable to say what the cylinders were and set up a 200 metre cordon around the site as a precaution.

He's proved himself the nation's best yet again.

But despite being crowned British air pistol open champion for the 13th time in 16 years, Dereham's Mick Gault looks almost certain to miss out on representing Britain at the 2008 Olympics.

And England's most decorated Commonwealth medallist in any sport will only be in line to compete in London 2012 if new shooters don't come through the ranks.

Mr Gault, 52, was on Tuesday celebrating a clean sweep of wins at the British Championships at Bisley over the weekend and described his latest feat as “pretty cool.”

It's the EDP but not as you know it - brimming with adverts for quack medicines and silk gloves and stories of drivers caught speeding at 12mph. The pages crackle to the touch and are coated with a fine layer of grit.

But the EDP from 11 April 1894 is in remarkable condition - particularly as it has spent more than 100 years under a floorboard in a Dereham shop.

Philip Morter, director of family-run electrical store Bennetts (Dereham) Ltd, uncovered the yellowed sheets of the EDP and the Lowestoft Weekly News tucked away in storage buildings at the back of the store in Norwich Street.

The Norfolk man who last month took on British Airways over their uniform policy has this month set himself the modest task of saving Christmas.

Marcus Stafford , 41, of Dillington near Dereham is a web designer and no stranger to harnessing his computer skills for political ends.

Marcus received a rapturous reception to his boycott British Airways website - which he set up in support of the check-in worker who was asked to remove a small cross pendant by the company.

His most recent venture is bringbackchristmas.co.uk - a site dedicated to the different ways traditional Christmas is being sidelined in favour of more commercially viable, politically correct alternatives.
