New Dereham mayor Ursula Cheetham has pledged to have an "open door" policy with local people, be more informal and have a common sense approach.
Mrs Cheetham, 40, has championed policies to improve facilities for parents, promote healthy living and support young people since becoming a town councillor three years ago.
And the new civic leader - who was unanimously elected by fellow councillors on Tuesday - has vowed to step her efforts during her year in office.
People living in the Dereham area may soon be enjoying better water thanks to a £1.8m investment.
Anglian Water hopes to build a new tank on its Cemetery Road site that will blend supplies from different sources to bring all its water into line with government guidelines about nickel content.
